It is troubling that some would urge us to be mindful that we don’t become desensitized to sin when Scripture tells us
- that we are dead to sin, and must think of ourselves as alive to God
Romans 6:5-11 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, (6) knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; (7) for he who has died is freed from sin. (8) Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, (9) knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. (10) For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. (11) Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
2. Romans 12:2 tells us to RENEW our minds
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
A renewed mind is one that leaves the negatives of the flesh and the world for the goodness of God:
Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. (9) The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Other than being a directive in direct violation of Scripture, doing so puts us in the wrong frame of mind for faith, and even borders on trying to be free and clean in our own strength (which leaves us neither free nor clean)
Colossians 2:23 These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.
Romans 8:5-8 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (6) For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, (7) because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, (8) and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
If we continue in this line of thinking, we will eventually find ourselves miserable AND in danger of being shipwrecked regrading Faith.
2 Timothy 3:5-7 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. (6) For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, (7) always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Once again, what looks like wisdom has creeped in under the door and risen up against God’s truth; CAREFUL AND THOROUGH READING OF SCRIPTURE IS OUR DEFENSE AGAINST SUCH NONSENSE.
